Like beta-carotene and Lutein, Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid. It is found in high concentrations in healthy retinas and is deficient in those eyes with macular degeneration. Although found in yellow-orange vegetables, the amounts required to be of benefit in eye disease are high and thus more easily obtained from high dose supplements.
The National Eye Institute has included Zeaxanthin in their newest eye research, known as AREDS 2.
